Arquetopia Synergy Award 2017 Recipient Announced!

Arquetopia Foundation has announced the 2017 recipient of the Arquetopia Synergy Award. Visual artist John Ildefonso (USA) was chosen for this award established by Arquetopia Foundation in 2015 which recognizes the work of international artists making an impact in the field of art and social transformation. Along with international recognition, the award includes a full fellowship to participate in ArquetopiaSUMMER 2017, a prestigious six-week critical international residency program in collaboration with the Museo Ex-Teresa Arte Actual in Mexico City, the Museo de Arte Religioso Ex Convento de Santa Mónica in Puebla, and special guest scholars from the United States, Mexico, and Iran.

For this award, an international jury was invited to review more than 100 visual art projects from an international pool of past Arquetopia artists, curators, educators, and historians, assessing each project’s contribution to social change and a more complex understanding of encounters and differences. During his previous residency at Arquetopia Oaxaca, Ildefonso worked on a series of paintings altering scale and composition of Oaxacan traditional public signage to challenge the perception of familiarity of public spaces as stable regions limited by borders. Considering the scope reflected in the theme and technique addressed in his residency project, the jury unanimously selected Ildefonso for his contribution to a more complex understanding of local identities in a transnational context.

Founded in 2009, Arquetopia was established to promote Development and social transformation through contemporary art practices. Since it inception, the Foundation seeks to open new horizons though international exchanges while confronting art and social transformation. The core of the Foundation is Sustainable Development through four principles embodied in all of Arquetopia’s programs and activities: social awareness, shared responsibility, innovation, and local networks development. The Arquetopia Synergy Award recognizes outstanding art practices including the following features: social scope; quality; synergy; collaboration; innovation; viability; reciprocity; and respect for local knowledge.
